Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS Installation

By | Posted, August 20th, 2010 and modified on October 21st, 2011.

Back to HIS Installation Home

Build your server hardware RAID array as required. Follow the instructions that came with your server. Purchase, request for or download the 64 bit version of Ubuntu Server from here. Follow the instructions on the same page for writing the downloaded .iso file to CD.  We will not be covering software RAID in this post. For those who have an IBM Server and are using RAID 1 (Mirroring) and the install fails at the end of the installation, check this post for a workaround to complete the installation.

The instructions in violet are specifically for the  installation of EHA’s HIS/HMS software. If you are not following these instructions but are looking for a generic install of Ubuntu 10, please  ignore the instructions in violet.

EHA users, please ignore the instructions in red. For you the instructions in violet are mandatory!!!

For the sake of brevity, only the screens which require input or need to be mentioned are shown. Please click the screenshots to enlarge them if they are not clearly visible.

It is good to have a working Internet connection during the install but is not strictly required. If you have a DHCP server (To receive automatic IP addresses) running on your network.,unplug the cable from the server until the network configuration is over. This makes it easier for newbies to assign a static IP to the server. If you are unsure of whether you have a server running, unplug the cable from the server!

Here we go then…Pop in the CD and boot from it.

Select English from the Language Selection screen

Select English on this screen too

Select India from the country list

Select "No" on the detect keyboard layout screen

Select "USA" for the origin of the keyboard

Select USA for the keyboard layout

If you didn’t have a DHCP server, or you disconnected the network cable like I recommended, you should first see an attempt by the installer to get a DHCP address and then get a Network Autoconfiguration Failed message. This is OK.

Select "configure network manually"

Type in your IP address here

EHA users must type in 192.168.1.222 so that subsequent server configuration documentation makes sense.

On the next two screens, type in 255.255.255.0 as the Netmask, 192.168.1.1 as the Gateway, and 8.8.8.8 as the Name server (DNS). These settings were chosen as this should get you online on most  Indian broadband service providers.

You can enter a name for your server here

EHA Users would enter hms here if this is the main server and hms-backup if this is the backup server (The server install steps  for both are the same)

Leave the domain name blank on the next screen and then accept the Asia/Calcutta time zone on the screen after that. You can also plug in your network cable now.

Select "Guided -Use entire disk and setup LVM" on this screen

Select the disk to install on in the next screen and proceed. If you setup hardware RAID successfully, you should see only a single disk here. Check this post for assistance if you still see 2 disks in a RAID1 setup.

Select "Yes" to accept the changes that the Installer proposes

On the next screen, accept the default size and click Continue

Select "Finish partitioning and write changes to disk"

Answer “Yes” at the next screen as the Installer reconfirms this step. On the next three screens, type in a full user name, login name and a password.

EHA users, type in admin as the user full name, ad as the username (login name) and create a password for this user.

At the "encrypt your home directory" prompt answer NO

On the next screen, select Install security updates automatically.

Select "OpenSSH Server" here

EHA Users select only OpenSSH server here.  We can connect to the server later via SSH to complete the rest of the HIS/HMS configuration.

Other readers can install the appropriate software packages as required. For example LAMP server will install Apache2, MySQL, and PHP on which you can run the CMS for your Joomla or WordPress based website.

Finally at the GRUB Install screen, Select yes to install the GRUB bootloader to the MBR

On completing the next screen, the installer will eject your installation disk. Remove it and your installation is complete!

The next steps depends on whether you are setting up the main server or the backup server.

If you are setting up the main server, follow the instructions given here

OR

If you are setting up the backup server, follow the instructions given here and after completing it, follow the instructions given here
