Get your backed up data transferred to your computer from wherever you have stored it.

  1. You backed up (probably) your email account details to a .iaf file (single file)
  2. You backed up your messages (Copy of the Outlook Express folder)
  3. You backed up your email address book/contacts to a .wab file (single file)

If you chose not to backup your email account settings, you can set it up now using the instructions here. If not…

Click on Tools > Accounts

Open Outlook Express and click on Tools > Accounts. (Cancel the wizard if he pops up)

Click on the Mail Tab and then click on the Import button. Browse to your saved .iaf file and click OK. Your email account has been restored! Close this window.

Now lets restore your addresses,

Open your addressbook by clicking on the 'Addresses' button. Then click on File> Import > Address Book (WAB). Your adddresses have been restored!

Open your addressbook by clicking on the 'Addresses' button. Then click on File> Import > Address Book (WAB). Point it to your backed up WAB addressbook

Click OK. Your addresses should now be restored

Finally for your messages!

Click on File > Import > Messages

Click on File > Import > Messages

Select Microsoft Outlook Express 6 from the list of options and click Next

Select 'Import Mail from an OE6 store_directory' and click OK

Select 'Import Mail from an OE6 store_directory' and click OK

Select the Outlook Express folder that you backed up

Select the Outlook Express folder that you backed up. Click OK

Select 'All Folders' and click next

This should complete the restore of your Outlook Express Data

After your restore, if you face any problems with opening attachments, (This happens on a fresh install of Windows XP)

  • Click on Tools > Options
  • Click on the security tab
  • Clear the check box:  ‘Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus
  • Click on OK
  • Close Outlook Express and open it again.
