Internet Explorer is currently running without add ons?

By | Posted, August 7th, 2009 and modified on October 4th, 2010.

untitled3I noticed this error message on many computers on our network running Windows XP after upgrading to service pack 3 and Internet explorer (IE) 8.  In addition the IE shortcut also  displays (No add-ons). I am not very sure whether it is related to the upgrades mentioned above (or some previous upgrade), but it seems to be some kind of a common problem which many patch Tuesday’s seem to have missed.

Trying to reset IE’s options from Tools>Options does not solve this problem. The problem for some users seems to be an invalid target for the IE shortcut while for others the shortcut actually runs IE with the -extoff flag. In both cases, deleting the shortcut works. Copy a new shortcut from the programs menu or run IE from the menu and let it re-create the shortcut for you.untitled2
