Instructions for backing up and restoring Windows Mail data in anticipation of a system format or system migration. I am covering both versions of Microsoft Office, 2003 & 2007 together as the menus and screens are similar.

Click on File > Import and Export

Select Export to a File and click Next

Select Personal Folder File (.pst) and click Next

For Office 2003: On this screen do not forget to select the "Include subfolders checkbox"

Browse to an appropriate Backup Location and click Finish

You can password protect the file for security if you want to, but things can get pretty messy if you forget your password

This should take care of everything except your account details. You need to take down those settings manually
The first step is common for the backup & restore, so click on File > Import and Export

Select Import From another Program or File and click Next

Select Personal Folder File (.pst) and click Next

Browse to your backup file and click next

Select Personal folders, check "Include Subfolders", and make sure that "Import Items into the same folder in Personal Folders" is selected or you will end up doing a lot of dragging and dropping after the restore.

Your restore is now complete
